Rough solar savings estimator

An honest ballpark: what panels on a Telford roof could be worth a year at today's prices. Assumptions are stated underneath.

Rough guide only

What could solar be worth on your roof each year?

More people at home in the day, a battery, an EV or a heat pump usually means a higher share. This is your own assumption, not a figure from a source.

Assumptions (please read)
  • Generation per kWp from PVGIS 5.3 for Telford: south 971, south-east/south-west about 918, east 775, west 767 kWh a year, for an unshaded roof at 35° with 14% system losses.
  • Electricity you use valued at the Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.32p/kWh (Direct Debit, 1 Oct to 31 Dec 2026). Your tariff may differ and prices change every quarter.
  • Exports valued at 12p/kWh, the typical Smart Export Guarantee rate quoted by the Energy Saving Trust. SEG rates vary by supplier.
  • Ignores shading, panel ageing, standing charges, the cost of the system and any finance. It's not a quote, a promise of savings or financial advice.

How this estimate works

Generation = system size × yearly output per kWp for your roof direction (from PVGIS 5.3 for Telford). We split that between power you use (valued at the Ofgem price cap unit rate, 26.32p/kWh) and power you export (valued at 12p/kWh, the typical SEG rate quoted by the Energy Saving Trust).

It doesn't include the cost of the system, finance, panel ageing, shading, standing charges or future price changes, so it isn't a payback figure. For payback, the Energy Saving Trust estimates roughly 9 to 12 years for a typical system with export payments (fuel prices July 2026). See the cost guide.

A proper survey will give you a much better estimate for your roof.
