Solar for Madeley homes
Madeley has an old town centre, some streets and sites close to (or within) the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, and large estates built as part of Telford new town, such as Woodside, Sutton Hill and Brookside.
New-town and ex-council homes
Many homes here are ex-council properties now privately owned. If you own your home, adding solar is usually straightforward. If you're a leaseholder (for example in a flat or maisonette), you'll usually need permission from the freeholder; the Planning Portal notes this too.
Low-pitched and flat roofs
Some estate homes have shallow roof pitches or flat roofs. Panels can still work: on flat roofs they're tilted on frames. Permitted development limits differ for flat roofs (equipment no more than 600mm above the highest part of the roof), so check the Planning Portal or ask the installer.
Near the Ironbridge Gorge
If your home is in the World Heritage Site or a conservation area, panels can't go on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway under permitted development, and listed buildings need consent. Check with Telford & Wrekin Council if you're not sure whether your street is covered.
Is there help with the cost?
Some Madeley homes may qualify for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, which can include solar panels if the council's survey recommends them. Eligibility depends on your EPC rating (D to G), income or benefits, or postcode (GOV.UK).
Grants and help with costs in Madeley
Madeley is in Telford & Wrekin. Contact Telford Energy Advice about the Warm Homes: Local Grant; some postcodes qualify automatically, regardless of income. See Telford Energy Advice and the GOV.UK Warm Homes: Local Grant page. Solar panels and batteries for homes are also zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 (HMRC Notice 708/6). Our grants guide covers ECO4, the Warm Homes Loan and export payments.
Costs
The Energy Saving Trust gives about £7,600 for a typical 4.5kWp system (fuel prices July 2026). Your quote depends on your roof and access. See the cost guide for sourced ranges by size, or try the rough estimator.
Choosing an installer
Whoever quotes, check them on the MCS register and confirm their consumer code. Here's how to check an installer.
