Solar for Newport homes and rural properties
Around Newport you'll find the town's historic high street, family housing and many detached homes, bungalows and farms in the surrounding villages. Larger roofs can mean larger systems, which changes a few things.
Bigger systems and the grid
Systems up to 3.68kW per phase can normally just be notified to the network operator after installation under G98. A bigger system, which is common on large detached homes, bungalows and farm buildings, usually needs approval from the network operator before installation (G99). This can add time, so ask your installer early. Properties with a three-phase supply can sometimes connect more capacity.
Bungalows
Bungalows often have large, accessible roofs, which can make installation simpler. But a lower roof means nearby trees and hedges are more likely to cause shading, so ask the installer to assess shading across the year, not just on the day they visit.
Outbuildings, barns and ground-mounted panels
Panels on garages and outbuildings, or ground-mounted arrays, are covered by their own permitted development limits. Check the Planning Portal rules or ask Telford & Wrekin's planning team before you commit. Business premises such as farms can also use the quote form: choose "Business premises".
Batteries for rural homes
If you're out working the land during the day and home in the evening, a battery may let you use more of your own solar. See our battery guide for sourced costs.
Grants and help with costs in Newport
Newport is in Telford & Wrekin, so Warm Homes: Local Grant applications go through Telford Energy Advice. Off-gas rural homes considering a heat pump may also want to check ECO4 before it closes on 31 December 2026. See Telford Energy Advice and the GOV.UK Warm Homes: Local Grant page. Solar panels and batteries for homes are also zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 (HMRC Notice 708/6). Our grants guide covers ECO4, the Warm Homes Loan and export payments.
Costs
The Energy Saving Trust gives about £7,600 for a typical 4.5kWp system (fuel prices July 2026). Your quote depends on your roof and access. See the cost guide for sourced ranges by size, or try the rough estimator.
Choosing an installer
Whoever quotes, check them on the MCS register and confirm their consumer code. Here's how to check an installer.
